Blogspot How To: Use the Official Twitter Tweet Buttons

Twitter is the most popular social networking site on internet. People share links on Twitter which receive a lot of traffic. You can also add the official Twitter tweet button with or without counter. This button will enable your blog visitors to easily share useful links on their Twitter accounts.

Get the Button Code!

First of all go to http://twitter.com/goodies/tweetbutton. Now follow these steps to get the code:

  1. Select the button from 3 available choice.

  2. If you've a Twitter account then enter your username in the second field. By doing this, whenever someone will share your blog post on Twitter, your username will also be added to that tweet. If you don't have a Twitter account, I strongly recommend to make one but, for now, you can skip this option.

  3. Copy the code from the box.

Add the Code in Your Blog!

Now we need to add the Twitter tweet button code in our Blogger blog. So, go to Design and then Edit HTML tab. Check Expand Widget Templates box. Search for this code:
<data:post.body/>

Place Twitter tweet button code immediately after the above code. You can also place the Twitter tweet button code immediately before the above code but then the Twitter button will appear between the post title and body.

Add Custom Text in the Twitter Tweet Button!

You can also add your own message in the Twitter button. For example if you want to add Hey, check it out: THE POST TITLE then you need to change expr:data-text='data:post.title' to expr:data-text='“Hey, check it out:“+data:post.title'.

Display Twitter Button Only on Post Pages!

If you want the tweet button to appear only on post pages then you need to change the button code. Now, your code will look something like this:
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;item&quot;'>

Blogspot How To: Quickly Get Your Blog Indexed by Search Engines

This is the most commonly asked question by new blog owners. Everyone loves traffic and traffic comes from search engines so we must make sure that our blog is regularly indexed by search engines specially Google. Here are simple things you can do to make sure the search engines always keep an eye on your blog and its content.

1- Submit Your Blog URL to Search Engines!

This is the first and most important step. You have to submit the address or URL of your blog to search engines. Tell them you're here & ready to rock. Here is a tutorial:

Blogspot SEO: Submit Your Blog to Google, Yahoo and Bing Search Engines

2- Submit Your Blog Sitemap to Google!

After submitting your URL, you should also submit your sitemap to Google. Sitemap contains links to all of your posts so it will help search engines crawl deeply. Google offers a very convenient way to do that through Google Webmaster Tools. Here is a video tutorial to do that:

3- Add a Followers Gadget & Encourage People to Follow You!

Blogger offers a fantastic gadget called Followers. It allows people to follow your blog which means whenever you'll publish a new post, it will appear on your followers' dashboard. For details see these links:

-> How do I add the Following gadget to my blog?

-> What is Following?

4- Link to Other Blogs!

Ask your friends or colleagues to add a link to your blog on their blogs. Make sure to avoid linking to spam or porn sites. Try linking to your older posts while writing new posts. For example, I've added links to previously written tutorials in this post.

5- Search Engines Love Fresh Content!

Make sure to add quality content and write often on your blog. Encourage comments and answer them regularly. Search Engines love updated content and will crawl your blog constantly. Don't copy from other blogs because duplicate content can result in severe punishments by search engines.

Final Words!

Nothing happens overnight. Don't be disappointed if you're not seeing any sudden changes in traffic. Changes can take at least a month or more depending on your blog's popularity and content quality. Install some tracking service (Google Analytics or SiteMeter) to keep an eye on your traffic and monitor the results. Feel free to ask any question or share anything good.

Blogspot SEO: Submit Your Blog to Google, Yahoo and Bing Search Engines

Search engines might take some time to discover and index your blog so, you can manually submit your blog to 3 major search engines Google, Yahoo and Bing. Don't submit links to multiple pages, just submit the URL/address of your blog homepage.

1- Submit your blog to Google

Open the following link and fill in your blog details. Google is king of internet so make sure to submit URL of all of your blogs.

http://www.google.com/addurl.html

2- Submit your blog to Yahoo

You can submit the URL of your blog or the RSS feed, both are accepted by Yahoo. Although Yahoo has far less search traffic than Google but people coming from Yahoo search stay longer on a blog.

3- Submit your blog to Microsoft Bing

Bing is the latest effort from Microsoft in search engine war. It might get a decent chunk in search engine traffic in the near future. Anyways, here is the link.

What About Less Popular Search Engines???

Some lesser known search engines like Alta Vista and Lycos use other search engines like Yahoo and Google to power their search, so don't worry about submitting your blog to them.

Tip: Make sure you also submit your blog sitemap to Google (?). It's quick, easy and free way to enhance your blog traffic.

Blogspot How to: Submit Blog Sitemap to Google via Google Webmaster Tools

Google controls 85% of the global search and any blog is heavily dependent on traffic from search result. We must make sure that all the posts or pages of our blog are indexed by Google. We can submit a blog sitemap to Google through Google Webmaster Tools. Google can then use this sitemap to quickly index all the entries of a blog.

This tutorial is also available in video format on my YouTube channel:

Where is the Sitemap of My Blogger/Blogspot Blog?

In very simple words, a sitemap is a large single web page containing all of your posts and labels. Blogger/Blogspot users can submit their feed as a sitemap to Google. All Blogger/Blogspot blogs have a feed address of this form:

http://www.bloggerfaqs.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default

The above feed can display only last 25 blog posts. Most blogs have more than 25 posts so we must make sure that all the posts should get indexed. To do that, we can change the above code to:

http://www.bloggerfaqs.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?max-results=500

Now, last 500 posts will be shown in the feed. Now, we have a sitemap & we're ready to submit it to Google through Google Webmaster Tools.

Open Google Webmaster Tools

Google Webmaster Tools provides you with detailed reports about your pages' visibility on Google. To get started, simply add and verify your site and you'll start to see information right away.

1- Go to the following address and sign in with your Google account:

http://www.google.com/webmasters/

2- Click on Add a Site button to add your blog.

3- A small box will appear, enter your blog URL in it.

4- Now you need to prove that you are the owner of this blog, for this you need to verify.

5- Chose Meta Tag as verification method and copy the tag which looks something like this:

<meta name="verify-v1" content="z6MLWEMxLvMFcoVNvGPKOMvAn1oJBKem+eTEpZ1F/DU=">

6- Now come back to your Blogger account and go to Design -> Edit HTML section.

7- Paste the Meta Tag right after <head> tag, the <head> tag is in the start of your code just after a few lines.

8- Once you've pasted the code, click on Save Template button to save your changes.

9- Now again go to you Webmaster Tools account and click on verify button to complete verification process.

10- If you've done everything right, you'll see that you're site is verified now.

Warning: Don't remove the Meta Tag after verification process, it might be checked again.

11- Now, you'll see a list of verified sites (I suppose you'll see only 1 site there) on your Google Webmaster Tools homepage.

12- Click on your site and you'll see a dashboard page of that site.

13- From the menu on the left side, expand the Site configuration option and then click Sitemaps.

14- On the next page, click Submit a Sitemap button and it will ask you to enter the sitemap of your blog. The address of your blog will be already there so you just have to add the remaining part which is:

feeds/posts/default?max-results=500

Overall the code would look something like this:

http://www.bloggerfaqs.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?max-results=500

So just submit the sitemap there and Google will take some time (Typically, less than 24 hours) to index the contents of your sitemap.

Final Thoughts

Many readers complain that there blog doesn't appear in search results even after getting indexed. Please note that getting indexed doesn't guarantee that you're blog will also appear in search results for a specific keyword. Just use natural post and blog titles, publish new posts regularly and engage with readers to get decent traffic from Google.

Blogger/Blogspot SEO (Search Engine Optimization) For Dummies

Make Blogger-Blogspot SEO Friendly

My experiences to make Blogger-Blogspot Search Engine friendly. Get more traffic by using these simple techniques. A lot of people think that Blogger-Blogspot is owned by Google so they would have an advantage in search results. That's not true at all. If you have a personal blog then SEO (Search Engine Optimization) might not be appealing to you but a professional blog must be search engine friendly.

1- Add a Blog Archive Gadget in Your Sidebar

Linking is the mother of SEO. A highly linked blog will be ranked higher in Google search results. It is not easy to get links from high quality sites but you can do internal linking by linking your posts with each other. The easiest way is to add a Blog Archive gadget in your sidebar. Go to Design then Page Elements tab. Click Add a Gadget link on your sidebar and chose Blog Archive gadget from the list. Don't change any options and save the gadget.

Blog Archive Gadget

The Blog Archive gadget will remain in your sidebar plus it contains links to all your posts and it will appear on every page of your blog. As a result, every time search engine will crawl any page of your blog, it will also find links of other pages as well because of Blog Archive gadget.

2- Replace Blog Title With Post Title on Post Pages

To understand this, lets create a test post with title This is my test post. The title of my test blog is My Test Blog. After publishing the test post, I opened it and this is how the title of my test post page appears.

Swap Blog Title with Post Title in Blogger-Blogspot

As you can see the blog title comes before the post title. So, we need to make sure that, on post pages, the post title must come first and then anything else. Then, it would be easier for search engines to index your post title as the page title. To do that, go to Design then Edit HTML tab and search for this code:
<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>

After that, replace it with the following code:
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;item&quot;'>
<title><data:blog.pageName/> - <data:blog.title/></title>
<b:else/>
<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>
</b:if>

Now, I checked the published test post page again and this is how my page title looked like:

Swap Blog Title with Post Title in Blogger-Blogspot 2

Now, your post title will appear first on search results. This is a very effective technique for Blogspot/Blogger SEO.

3- Submit Your Blog Sitemap to Google Through Google Webmaster Tools

It is very important to make sure that all the blog pages/posts are indexed by search engines. Google has provided us an easy solution through Google Webmaster Tools. It is a free service and you can use it with your Google/Blogger account.

4- Use Google Adwords Keyword Tool

This is the most amazing free tool from Google. When a user is looking for something, he/she will type it and hope for the best search results. So, as a webmaster or a blog owner you should ask yourself these questions:

  1. What are the keywords these users are using?
  2. Which keywords are used more than others?
  3. How many people are searching for a specific keyword in US or some other location?
  4. Are my competitors also using those keywords?
  5. How many sites are targeting certain keywords?

The simplest way to know is to use Google Adwords Keyword Tool. I've read a great article for using this tool:

Using Google AdWords Keyword Tool for SEO

5- Use Meta Description Tags to Improve Click-through Rate

Our first goal is to get a better position in SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) but what if a blog is appearing at the 1st position for a certain keyword search but users aren't clicking it? Because People use illegal methods to get higher rankings in search results but such techniques often result in poor click-through rate. To improve click-through rate, you have to:

  1. Use natural titles for blog and posts.
  2. Use meta description tags to convey what your blog/post is all about.
  3. Use the findings of Google Keyword Tool to write better posts.
  4. Don't use same keywords again and again, try something real.

You can know more about meta tags here:
